May 2003 Methadone-Associated Mortality: Report of a National Assessment An expert panel convened by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) evaluated the possible causes of a 176% increase in methadone-related emergency room visits between 1995 and 2002. The panels findings were published in 2004. The panel sought to assess SAMHSA policies that may have contributed to methadone diversion from addiction treatment clinics and the increased number of methadone-related emergencies and deaths.
