As of May 14, 2014, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that the state’s 34 adult institutions housed 116,428 inmates, putting the prison system at 140.8% capacity and in compliance with by the federal district court order to reduce the prison population to 143% of design capacity by June 30, 2014. The June 30 population target is 118,270. The prison system is designed to house 82,707 inmates.
