Pennsylvania DPW Medical Assistance Bulletin: Consultations Performed Using Telemedicine
May 23, 2012
The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) expanded coverage for fee-for-service Medicaid beneficiaries receiving specialist services provided via telemedicine technology, which the state defined as two-way, real-time interactive communication. Referring physicians, certified registered nurse practitioners, and certified nurse midwives are no longer required to be present during the encounter. However, if the referring professional is present, then they can bill for an office visit as well as for originating site services. The remote specialist can bill for the encounter as a consultation. The bulletin provides the needed codes.
