Behavioral Health Treatment Needs Assessment Toolkit

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration outlined steps that states and other payers can use to project demand for behavioral health services by newly eligible populations enrolled in the Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act in 2014. The report estimates that once more people become insured, mental health care and overall costs will increase by 25%, hospital admission by 30%, use of outpatient care by 35%, and use of prescription drugs by 15%.
