Summary of Mental Disorder Hospitalizations, Active & Reserve Components, U.S. Armed Forces, 2000-2012

The Armed Services Health Surveillance Center’s Medical Surveillance Monthly Report contains a section reporting that mental disorders are the leading cause of military hospitalizations, and that mental disorder-related hospitalizations have increased in number and duration among military members since 2006. These types of hospitalizations have increased by 87% from 2000 to 2011. The overall increase has been largely due to post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, alcohol abuse and dependence, and adjustment disorder.
