July 29, 2013
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General (OIG) conducted an analysis of Medicare data to report hospitalsÂ’ use of observation stays and short inpatient stays during 2012. The study was based on an analysis of Medicare Part A and Part B hospital claims from 2012 and skilled nursing facility Part A claims for beneficiaries who received those hospital stays. The report found that Medicare beneficiaries had 1.5 million observation stays; and that those beneficiaries commonly spent one night or more in the hospital.
