Work Activity Indicates Certain Social Security Disability Insurance Payments Were Potentially Improper GAO-13-635

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program made an estimated $1.29 billion in improper payments to about 36,000 individuals between December 2010 and January 2013. The 36,000 individuals represent about one percent of all SSDI beneficiaries. The SSDI program provides cash assistance program for workers with disabilities, but sets earnings limits. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reviewed SSDI payments for a sample of recipients and matched the payment records with a national registry of new hires to determine if any recipients in the sample received overpayments.
