Department Of Justice Memo To Bureau Of Prisons: Reducing Our Use Of Private Prisons
On August 18, 2016, the Department Of Justice (DOJ) issued this public memo to the Bureau of Prisons (BOP), directing the BOP to reduce its use of private prisons, and ultimately end the contracts. The BOP contracts with three private companies to operate 14 prisons that house non-citizen immigrants convicted of federal crimes. As each of the 14 existing federal private prison contracts reaches the end of its term, the DOJ instructed the BOP to decline to renew or substantially reduce the scope of the contract.
