The statistics in this report released on September 16, 2014 are based on the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) National Prisoner Statistics (NPS) program, which collects annual data from state departments of corrections and the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) on prisoner counts, demographics, admissions, releases, and prison capacity. The combined state and federal prison population on December 31, 2013 was nearly 1.6 million, representing a 0.3% increase over 2012.
