August 2007 The U.S. Census Bureau, in its latest report on income, poverty, and health insurance, estimates that there were 47 million Americans without health insurance in 2006. These persons account for nearly 16% of the population and represent a 16% increase over the 2005 number of 44.8 million. Likewise, the number of uninsured children increased from 8 million to 8.7 million, or nearly 11% of the population.
