How Many Children Were Adopted in 2007 and 2008?

The federal Children's Bureau has released findings on the number of children adopted in the United States in 2007 and 2008. The report found that in 2008, 136,000 children were adopted in the United States; this total includes children adopted from the child welfare system, as well as private and international adoptions. The annual number of adoptions has increased by 6% over the 127,985 children adopted in 2000. Despite the increase in the number of children adopted, the adoption rate per 100,000 adults decreased five percent between 2000 and 2008, from 61.5 to 58.3 . . .
