North Carolina House Bill 625: an Act to Rename Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services Facilities
July 5, 2007 This law called for renaming several service facilities to clarify their functions. The hospitals will now be referred to as: Psychiatric hospitals for people with mental illness Developmental centers for people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities  Alcohol and drug treatment centers for people with substance abuse disorders  Neuro-medical treatment centers for special care of people with co-morbid mental health disorders and developmental disabilities This law also establishes the Whitaker and Wright Schools as residential programs for children and notes the closing of the Dorothea Dix Hospital, which previously served psychiatric patients.
