North American Opiate Medication Initiative Study Update

October 2008 The North American Opiate Medication Initiative (NAOMI) study is a clinical trial to test whether heroin-assisted therapy benefits people with chronic opiate addictions who have not benefited from other treatments. The concept has been tested in Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. The Dutch and German studies suggested that the cost of the heroin therapy was offset by increased savings in health and criminal justice costs.
