The lawsuit, U.S. ex rel Drakeford v Tuomey Healthcare System Inc., was filed in 2005 as a whistleblower complaint. It alleged that Tuomey Healthcare System violated federal Medicare and Medicaid kickback statutes under the Stark Law and the False Claims Act. In May 2013, a jury found the system guilty of submitting false claims and violating the kickback statutes.
