Highlights of the 2011 Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) Findings on Drug-Related Emergency Department Visits

November 1, 2012
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Drug Abuse Warning Network report contains data on the number of drug-related hospital emergency department visits in 2011. The data is reported by a sampling of hospitals to produce representative data for the nation. These estimates are used to monitor trends in major substances of abuse, to assess alcohol use by minors, to identify new drugs of abuse, to identify the abuse potential of prescription and over-the-counter drugs to better inform labeling and scheduling decisions, and to reveal changing patterns of drug abuse.
