Supplemental Poverty Measure: 2010
November 10, 2011 The Census Bureau used data from the 2011 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement with income information that refers to calendar year 2010. The same data are used to estimate the official poverty rate. This supplemental poverty measure (SPM) accounts for the effects of in-kind government programs that free up cash resources for other purposes and accounts for the effects of medical out-of-pocket spending, work- related costs for transportation and child care, and differences in the cost of living for different geographic regions.
