Hospitalizations Related to Drug Abuse, 2005
October 2007 In 2005, drug abuse was noted in 1.3 million hospital stays in the United States (approximately 3.3% of all stays), totaling nearly $10 billion in hospital costs. The most frequently named drugs on discharge records for drug abuse hospitalizations were opoids and cocaine. Patients hospitalized for drug abuse were six years younger on average than the typical hospital patient.
