Texas Sunset Advisory Commission Staff Report About the Texas Youth Commission, Texas Juvenile Probation Commission, & Office of Independent Ombudsman

November 2008 The Commission reviewed the three agencies to identify and eliminate waste, duplication, and inefficiency. The Commission seeks public input through hearings on every agency under Sunset review and recommends actions on each agency to the full Legislature. In most cases, agencies under Sunset review are automatically abolished unless legislation is enacted to continue them. The three agencies under review provide services to individuals involved in the juvenile justice system. The Texas Youth Commission facilities supervise five percent of youth in the system. The Texas Juvenile Probation Commission oversees probation services for 95% of youth in the juvenile justice . . .
