In December 2012, the National Governors Association (NGA) released an NGA paper on the role of nurse practitioners in meeting increasing demand for primary care. NGA undertook a review of the literature and state rules governing nurse practitioners' (NPs') scope of practice to answer three questions pertaining to the role of NPs in meeting the increasing demand for primary care: (1) to what extent do scope of practice rules for NPs, as well as licensure and other conditional requirements, vary across states?; (2) to what extent do the rules and requirements of states vary from the evidence . . .
