Prepared Remarks of Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey at the National Association of Attorneys General Winter Meeting
November 29, 2007 United States Attorney General, Michael B. Mukasey highlighted three areas of cooperation between state and federal law enforcement. A key topic was increased state reporting of mental illness records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. As of June 2007, only 23 states reported individuals with records of mental illness that would render the individual ineligible to purchase a gun. Thirty-two states now transmit this information.
