Michael Varadian, J.D., MBA, brings more than 30 years of senior leadership experience in public and private sector health care and behavioral health operations. He specializes in national and state-wide projects ranging from health care finance and fiscal oversight to behavioral health system development.
Most recently, Mr. Varadian served as the Senior Vice President and National Director of Health Reform at Providence Service Corporation. In this position, he led a multi-billion dollar, international behavioral health managed care company, to design and implement integrated and collaborative care initiatives. The implementation included partnering with payers, employers, academic medical centers, and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) throughout Providence’s home and community-based operations in 31 states.
Before joining Providence Service Corporation, Mr. Varadian was the Executive Director of Operations and Policy for the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals. While there, he led all department efforts in Medicaid health reform, integrated care, and workforce development. He is credited with implementing the nation’s first CMS Health Home Pilot for seriously mentally ill individuals, and the nation’s second opiate treatment program health home for the opiate-dependent population. Both of the developed programs have been considered national models for all other states. In addition, he assisted in Rhode Island’s efforts to obtain one of the earliest Medicaid Global Waivers, Health Insurance Exchange, and a CMS State Innovation Model (SIM) grant for integrated care and payment reform.
During his time in Rhode Island, Mr. Varadian also served as the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, where he headed-up all health care regulation; health plan certifications and licensing; professional credentialing and disciplinary boards; the Certificate of Need Program; health and safety inspections; and statewide regulations and oversight of all vital environmental areas.
Mr. Varadian earned his Juris Doctor degree at Suffolk University Law School in Boston, MA, his Masters of Business Administration degree at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and his Bachelor of Science Degree at Babson College, in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Additionally, he is a member of the Massachusetts Bar and the U.S. Supreme Court Bar.
