Biography

Robert Cuyler, Ph.D. brings more than 30 years of experience in the mental health and strategic planning fields to OPEN MINDS. During his career, Dr. Cuyler has served in various senior-level management positions and established Clinical Psychology Consultants, LLC, a consulting practice focused on behavioral health telemedicine services. He is the lead author of the book Implementing Telemedicine: Completing Projects on Target on Time on Budget, co-authored by Dutch Holland, Ph.D.

Dr. Cuyler currently serves as Chief Clinical Officer of Palo Alto Health Sciences, Inc., which offers Freespira, an FDA-cleared intervention for the treatment of panic attacks and panic disorder. Previously, Dr. Cuyler served as Interim Chief Executive Officer of JSA Health LLC, a Houston, Texas-based company providing specialty mental health services via telemedicine. While at JSA, he played an integral role in opening up new markets in hospital system emergency departments, university student health services, specialty psychiatric hospitals, and cruise ship health services. Dr. Cuyler co-authored (with JSA founder and lead author Dr. Avrim Fishkind) the chapters “Telepsychiatry and e-Mental Health” in Handbook of Community Psychiatry and “Telepsychiatry” in Behavioral Emergencies: A Handbook for Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Cuyler previously served as a Senior Vice President at Diamond Healthcare. He also co-founded Heritage Health Services, a behavioral health management company, where he served as COO and as Clinical Director until Diamond Healthcare acquired Heritage.

His numerous public policy roles have included membership on the Texas Hospital Association’s Psychiatric Advisory Council, President and Board Member of the Association for Ambulatory Behavioral Healthcare, and member of the National Institute of Mental Health’s National Mental Health Leadership Council. Dr. Cuyler is a Life Science Advisor for Rice University’s Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and a judge at the University’s annual Rice Business Plan Competition.

Dr. Cuyler received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Louisiana State University and Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Menninger Foundation.
