In January 2013, the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago published a report assessing trends in the use of information technology (IT) by state and local governmental public health departments to capture, manage, analyze, and report information following the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010, recent work in public health informatics, and other factors.
