Assisted Living Residents With Dementia Had Higher All-Cause Mortality During COVID-19
All-cause mortality rates among assisted living residents with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) rose during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). During the same period, mortality rates declined slightly among the general population of residents without ADRD. About 31% of all assisted living residents had an ADRD diagnosis.
From January 1, 2019 to March 11, 2020, the average weekly all-cause mortality rate was 217.6 per 100,000 assisted living residents. From March 12 to December 31, 2020, adjusted excess mortality rates increased by 49.1 deaths per 100,000. Most of the increase in excess mortality . . .
