After Prison, North Carolina Individualized Reentry Plans Are Reducing Recidivism For Offenders With I/DD

About 86% of North Carolina offenders with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) who participated in an individualized reentry planning (IRP) program to prevent recidivism have avoided rearrest and return to prison. The program, called “Justice: Release, Reentry, and Reintegration,” launched in July 2020. As of July 2022, 130 offenders with I/DD housed at 13 North Carolina prisons have participated.

The program is provided by the Alliance of Disability Advocates Center for Independent Living (Alliance). The goal is to improve transition outcomes after incarceration for individuals with I/DD by expanding specialized practices for reintegration into the community. Target goals . . .
