Impaired Kidney Function Linked With Cognitive Disorders

People with albuminuria, a urinary marker of impaired kidney function, have a 65% higher risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Albuminuria is a condition in which the protein albumin is abnormally present in the urine. People with diagnosed chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a 51% higher risk of developing dementia.

The risk of cognitive disorders among people with impaired kidney function or CKD was noted in an analysis of data from the population-based Framingham Heart Study. For this analysis, the researchers selected a sample of 2,738 participants without dementia. Within this group, 7% (187 people . . .
