California Law Releases Nurse Practitioners From Physician Oversight

Starting January 1, 2023, all nurse practitioners (NPs) in California who meet the experience criteria will be able to practice independently, without direct physician oversight under a new law going into effect that expands their scope of practice. This change in practice rules is due to legislation, Assembly Bill (AB) 890 of 2020, which was signed on September 29, 2020 and goes into effect on January 1, 2023. Under current regulations, NPs must always work under a physician’s supervision. Once approved, this law establishes experience requirements for an NP to practice without standardized oversight in limited settings or organizations . . .
