Autism Prevalence Tripled From 2000 To 2016 In The New York-New Jersey Metro Area
From 2000 to 2016, autism prevalence rates among 8-year-olds in New Jersey tripled, from 9.6 per 1,000 in 2000 to 31.8 per 1,000 in 2016. The prevalence of autism with co-occurring intellectual disability (defined as an intelligence quotient (IQ) of 70 or lower) doubled from 2.9 per 1,000 in 2000 to 7.3 per 1,000 in 2016. The prevalence of autism without intellectual disability increased by 500%, from 3.8 per 1,000 in 2000 to 18.9 per 1,000 in 2016.
