Kansas Increased Inpatient Psychiatric Capacity By 32% Since 2019

Over the past four years, Kansas increased the number of inpatient psychiatric beds by 32%, from 721 in 2019 to 954 in 2023. The 233 additional beds were added at child inpatient facilities, psychiatric residential treatment facilities (PRTF), and adult inpatient psychiatric facilities. The increase had been recommended in 2019 as key to stabilizing the public behavioral health system.
