CCBHC Model Reduced Behavioral Health Emergency Department Visits In Pennsylvania & Oklahoma
A recent study evaluated the correlation between Medicaid beneficiaries receiving care from Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) and behavioral health-related emergency department (ED) visits in three states from 2015-2019. In two of the states, Pennsylvania (PA) and Oklahoma (OK), the number Medicaid behavioral health ED visits declined for those beneficiaries who received care at a CCBHC (13% and 11%, respectively). In Missouri, there was no CCBHC-ED visit correlation. These three states were among the original eight states selected to participate in the Medicaid CCBHC payment demonstration that started in 2017.
