Cost Of 30-Day Hospital Readmission 6% Higher Among Those With Alzheimer’s

The cost of a 30-day hospital readmission following hospital discharge was 5.9% ($467) higher for those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) than people without ADRD, according to an analysis of data from the Michigan Value Collaborative. The average readmission cost was $8,378 for those with ADRD and $7,912 for those without ADRD. The highest costs were for those who underwent lung cancer resection ($4,018 average), joint replacement ($2,395 average), hysterectomy ($2,017 average), and kidney stone surgery ($1,853 average).
