Sacramento County, California Transitions Foster Youth Out Of Former Juvenile Detention Facility After State Refuses To Issue License
As of June 16, 2023, Sacramento County, California moved all youth from the Warren E. Thornton Youth (WET) Center, a former juvenile detention facility, as required by the California Department of Social Services (DSS). The county had applied to license the WET Center as a temporary shelter care facility, but on May 16, 2023, the state DSS denied the county’s application, ordered the county to halt new placements, and gave the county a month to transition all youth out by June 16, 2023, or face fines of $200 per day per foster youth.
