California Board Of State & Community Corrections Finds Los Angeles County Juvenile Halls ‘Unsuitable,’ Orders County To Move Youth Out

On May 23, 2023, the California Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) found two Los Angeles County juvenile halls unsuitable for housing youth.  The BSCC gave the county 60 days to close the Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar and the Central Juvenile Hall in Boyle Heights. It ordered the county to move the approximately 300 youth housed at the facilities while awaiting adjudication of their charges to new placements. The county plans to move the residents of the two halls to the Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey.
