As of April 25, 2012, the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that California's prison population was 137,761, 15.4% lower than the population in April 2011. The inmate census is currently about 155% of the state’s prison system design capacity, which meets a court-ordered population target for June 2012. CDCR anticipates that it will be able to meet the December 2012 target of operating at no more than 147% of design capacity.
