DOJ Says South Carolina Unnecessarily Segregates Adults With Mental Illness In Violation Of ADA
On July 6, 2023, the federal Department of Justice (DOJ) said that the State of South Carolina’s use of Community Residential Care Facilities (CRCFs) unnecessarily segregates adults with serious mental illness in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In its investigation report, the DOJ said that the state fails to provide sufficient community-based services, and the services that are provided are not sufficiently available across the state. Those placed in a CRCF have little contact with people without disabilities; some only leave the homes for medical appointments or for group visits to grocery and convenience stores . . .
