California To Transform San Quentin Prison Into A Services & Support Rehabilitation Center
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) with the support of Governor Gavin Newsom and a budget of $380 million plans to transform the maximum-security San Quentin prison by 2025 into a one-of-a-kind facility focused on improving public safety through rehabilitation and education. As of July 19, 2023, San Quentin held 3,787 inmates, about 4% of California’s total incarcerated population. After the transformation is complete, the facility will be renamed the “San Quentin Rehabilitation Center.”
