The Addiction Gap
The recent study on the lack of use of medication-assisted therapies in the treatment of addictions was eye opening (see 20% Of Adults With Opioid Use Disorder Received Medication-Assisted Treatment In 2021). It’s a frequent story in the health and human service field—the long time gap between proven science and widespread adoption across the service delivery system. In addition, addiction treatment financing and service delivery suffers from uneven access to services, conflicting rules on reimbursement, lack of focus on co-occurring disorders, and less than useful outcome measurement data.
