Of the approximately 3,065 adult board and care homes operating in Los Angeles County, California about 750, or 24.5%, serve or are willing to serve people on public benefits, those living with mental illness, or those who have been homeless. These facilities have an estimated total licensed bed capacity of 25,000 beds to serve all consumers. Those facilities that were not interested in housing these people serve adults with developmental disabilities under a different funding system, or they only take older residents who are on private insurance or can self-pay.
