Medicare Advantage Insurers Set To Collect $12.8 Billion In Federal Bonus Payments

Medicare Advantage (MA) insurers will collect at least $12.8 billion in federal bonus payments in 2023. This is a nearly 30% increase from 2022 ($10 billion), and four times the bonus payments in 2015 ($3 billion). A full 85% of MA enrollees are in plans that are receiving bonus payments in 2023.

UnitedHealthcare (29% of enrollment share) and Humana (18% of enrollment share) are expected to receive 49% of the total bonus payments in 2023, at $3.9 billion dollars for UnitedHealth and $2.3 billion dollars for Humana.
