Hazelden Betty Ford Collaborates With OPEN MINDS To Amplify The Promise Of Digital Solutions In Behavioral Health

Collaboration begins with upcoming preview of new digital version of The ASAM Criteria®, Fourth Edition

GETTYSBURG, PA (October 23, 2023) — OPEN MINDS and the nonprofit Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation are working together to highlight the benefits of innovative digital solutions to behavioral healthcare professionals and the people they serve. Their collaboration kicks off Oct. 26, with a preview of the new digital version of The ASAM Criteria®, Fourth Edition at The OPEN MINDS 2023 Technology & Analytics Institute in Philadelphia.

“Our evolution into an innovative, technology-forward publisher has accelerated, and we look forward to working with OPEN MINDS to drive and deepen the dialogue in our industry about the potential of digital products to strengthen professional education, enhance learning, improve care and reach more people,” said Joe Jaksha, who leads Hazelden Publishing, a part of Hazelden Betty Ford that has touched millions of lives over the past 70 years with its recovery literature, professional curriculum and consultation services.

A prime example of Hazelden Publishing’s growing focus on digital solutions is the recent digital release of the newest edition of The ASAM Criteria, a book of standards developed by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and first published in 1991. The ASAM Criteria promotes individualized and holistic treatment planning, and guides clinicians and care managers in making objective decisions throughout the course of care for people with substance use and co-occurring conditions.

Published by Hazelden Publishing, the first volume of the new fourth edition of The ASAM Criteria was launched as a digital product earlier this month, offering a unique experience that includes an all-new digital subscription option with a searchable, reimagined e-reader, plus supplementary multimedia content designed to make it easier to access, understand, and apply the standards to improve patient care. The enhanced digital design was developed based on input Hazelden Publishing collected from users of The ASAM Criteria, including clinicians, administrators, regulators and managed care professionals.

“We are excited to help promote the new ASAM Criteria, which plays such a pivotal role in the behavioral health ecosystem, and to collaborate with Hazelden Betty Ford as it begins to bring more digital solutions to market,” said Monica E. Oss, CEO of OPEN MINDS. “Together, we share a deep commitment to health care innovation, serving the behavioral health profession, and advancing care for all who are affected by substance use and mental health conditions.”

The ASAM Criteria was last updated in 2013. The new edition reflects the current state of scientific evidence and clinical best practices. In addition to the October release of the digital version of the new first volume of the fourth edition, preorders of the print version are now open and will ship in December.

Hazelden Betty Ford and ASAM leaders will present the fourth-edition updates at a special briefing on the second day of The OPEN MINDS 2023 Technology & Analytics Institute, to be held Oct. 25-27 in Philadelphia, and will also have an exhibit booth at the event. The special session on Thursday, Oct. 26, is entitled: Elevating Addiction & Co-Occurring Care Through Digital Transformation: The Revised and Reimagined ASAM Criteria. Participants will hear firsthand about the revisions and how the latest edition was published under a digital transformation initiative; see a clinical provider demonstrate effective use of the revised standards; and get the opportunity try out the enhanced digital experience themselves.

Hazelden Betty Ford and OPEN MINDS will also collaborate on a webinar to be held in the first quarter of 2024, and Hazelden Betty Ford has secured OPEN MINDS exhibit spaces and sponsorships throughout the upcoming year.
