No Increase In Crime Detected Around NYC Overdose Prevention Centers
A review of crime reports in the neighborhoods surrounding first two overdose prevention centers (OPCs) in the nation found that after the OPCs opened in November 2021 in New York City, there were no significant increases in violent crimes or property crimes, or 911 calls for crime or medical incidents. Additionally, the volume of 311 calls reporting drug use or unsanitary conditions near the OPCs remained essentially the same after the OPCs opened. Police narcotics enforcement around the OPCs significantly declined.
