Food Insecurity Among Older Adults Associated With Higher Dementia Risk

Compared with food-secure older adults, older adults experiencing low food security had 38% higher odds of dementia. The odds of dementia were 37% higher for older adults experiencing very low food security.

Food security status was assessed using the validated US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Six-Item Short Form US Household Food Security Survey Module. This survey asks a series of questions related to food purchases and consumption over the past 12 months to determine food security status, such as whether they were able to afford the food they needed or whether they ate less due to financial constraints . . .
