About 9% Of Youth In Foster Care Have I/DD

The population of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in U.S. foster care was 39,143, or 8.9% of the 437,465 youth in the U.S. foster care system during 2016. Overall, among all youth with I/DD enrolled in Medicaid, 23,018 youth had autism spectrum disorder (ASD), of which only (4.3%) had foster care involvement. In comparison, 10,701 youth with both ASD and intellectual disability (ID) had foster care involvement (4.6%); and 5,424 youth with ID only had foster care involvement (5.1%).
