Worldwide, Mortality Among Young Children Down 51% Between 2000 & 2022
Mortality among children under age five worldwide declined by 51% between 2000 and 2022, from 9.9 million in 2000 to 4.9 million deaths in 2022, according to data collected by the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME). Nearly half of these deaths in 2022 were newborns. There were another 2.1 million deaths among children and youth between ages five and 24 years. Most of these deaths were concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia.
