On April 8, 2024, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) announced a two-year plan to invest $15 million to create nine more behavioral health urgent care centers across the state, doubling the number of centers in the state. These centers are an alternative to emergency departments for people in a behavioral health crisis.

Behavioral health urgent care facilities provide mental health and substance use services for children and adults experiencing a crisis. They offer 24-hour access to mental health specialists who can assist with diagnosis and assessment, medication management, and treatment options.
