California Governor Proposes Holding Cities & Counties Accountable For Creating Housing Capacity

On April 18, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a plan to hold cities and counties accountable for how they use state funding to address homelessness. The accountability measures come with increased state oversight and enforcement. Under these new measures jurisdictions that receive state funding will be accountable for building additional housing to reduce homelessness. If a jurisdiction falls short, the state could provide technical assistance or could pursue consequences.
