90% Of U.S. Adults Meet Criteria For Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome

Between 2011 and 2020, 89.6% of adults in the United States met the criteria for cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKM). Most met the criteria for early stages, but nearly 15% met the criteria for advanced CKM and are at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). CKM encompasses heart disease, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, which are pathophysiologically interrelated and were the leading causes of death in 2021.

There are five CKM syndrome stages:

Stage 0 CKM: No CKM risk factors. About 10.6% of adults are at this stage.
