Australian Study Finds Childhood Maltreatment Responsible For Up To 40% Of Mental Health Conditions

Childhood maltreatment may be responsible for up to 40% of mental health conditions in Australia, according to a recent study. The study found that childhood maltreatment was present for 41% of people who attempted suicide, 35% of those who had other incidents of self-harm, and 21% of those diagnosed with depression. Had childhood maltreatment in Australia been eliminated, there would have been an estimated 66,143 fewer years of life lost (death) and 118,493 fewer years lived with disability, totaling 184,636 fewer years of healthy life lost through mental health conditions in the country.
