Counties In South Had The Highest Percent Population Change In 2022 To 2023
Counties in the Southern and Western states had population increases between 2022 and 2023 that were higher than the national average county population increase. Nationally, across all 3,144 counties, populations increased by an average of 0.29%. About 60% of counties (1,876 counties) gained population between 2022 and 2023 and 1,268 lost population. During the previous year (2021 to 2022), about 52% of counties gained population.
For 2022 to 2023, in the Southern region (1,422 counties), county populations increased by 0.56%. Across this region, 950 counties gained population, and 472 lost population.
