Number Of U.S. Adults Under Probation Or Parole Dropped 1% Between January & December 2022
At year-end 2022, an estimated 3,668,800 adults in the U.S. were under community supervision (probation or parole), according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). This is a 1.0% (36,700 individuals) decrease from January 1, 2022. Since 2012, the total adult community supervision population fell 23%, from 4,790,700 to 3,668,800.
During 2022, the number of persons on parole declined from 745,300 to 698,800 (down 6.2% from January 2022). This is the second largest decrease since 1980, when BJS started collecting yearly probation . . .
